Weighted Draft Lottery for Fantasy Leagues
A weighted draft lottery gives every team a different chance at the first pick instead of a flat random shuffle. Assign lottery balls by last season's record — worst team gets the most — and let the draw decide, exactly the way the NBA Draft Lottery works.
How weighted odds work
Each team is given a number of lottery balls. Every ball is one entry in the draw, so a team with 40 balls is twice as likely to be pulled first as a team with 20. Once a team is drawn, it is removed from the pool and the remaining balls are redrawn for the next pick, so no team can win two slots.
That means the worst team is favored for the top pick but never guaranteed it — which is the whole point. A flat randomizer treats a 2-11 season the same as a 12-1 season. Weighting rewards the teams that had the roughest year without handing them the first pick outright.
Choosing your ball counts
There is no single correct split, but most leagues use one of these:
- Inverse standings. Last place gets the most balls, first place the fewest, spread evenly in between. Simple and easy to explain.
- Non-playoff teams only. Playoff teams draft in reverse finish order; everyone who missed the postseason goes into the lottery. This is the most common anti-tanking setup.
- Flattened odds. Ball counts that are close together, so finishing last is only a small edge. Discourages tanking hardest.
LotteryDraft lets you type any ball count you like per team, so you can copy whichever structure your league already voted on.
Running the draw
Enter your league name, switch on Weighted lottery, and fill in a ball count next to each team. Run the draw and you get an animated reveal of the full order, first pick to last.
If your league wants to watch together, use a sealed reveal instead: the order is generated now but stays hidden behind a shared countdown until the time you pick, so everyone finds out at the same moment. You can also email every manager their result automatically.
